A coupling library for the force dimension haptic devices and the 20-sim modelling and simulation environment

Abstract: A haptic feedback device is a device that establishes a kinaesthetic link between a human operator and a computer-generated environment. This paper addresses the bidirectional coupling between a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) haptic feedback device and a general-purpose modelling and simulation environment. In particular, an open-source library is developed to couple the Force Dimension omega.7 haptic device with the 20-sim modelling and simulation environment. The presented coupling interface is also compati… Show more

“…Haptic rendering, associated with virtual/augmented reality, is an emerging term within the field of gaming (Tokuyama et al, 2019), robot control (Liu et al, 2019), training/rehabilitation (Bortone et al, 2018), and human-machine interaction (Sanfilippo et al, 2015;Sanfilippo and Pacchierotti, 2018;Sanfilippo and Pacchierotti, 2020). Haptic rendering is the process of computing and generating forces in response to user interactions with virtual objects (Salisbury et al, 1995).…”

“…Other efforts to provide access to haptic devices can be found in the literature. SimHaptics 16 [52] is an opensource library to deliver haptic feedback that is compatible with devices produced by Force Dimension. To be applied in the field of training in medicine, Virtual Surgery SDK was created by Kolsanov et al [30].…”

“…In addition, most of these systems are based on proprietary hardware and software. While various haptic software libraries are available, these tools still require significant programming skills to be integrated [6]. This process can therefore often be a frustrating and time-consuming activity, which can cause researchers to concentrate too much on language and syntax, preventing them from paying adequate attention to the logic of their applications.…”
