A Critical Appraisal of the Theoretical Validity of the Mednick Remote Association Test

Abstract: The validity of Mednick's Remote Associates Test (the RAT) is critically evaluated. First, Mednick's theoretical conceptualization of creativity and his explanation of the derivation of the RAT are briefly reviewed. Thereafter, the theoretical, predictive, convergent and discriminant validity of the RAT are critically examined in the light of both theory and empirical findings.

“…The strength of the correlations between performance on tests of convergent thinking and measures of real-world creativity vary from very weak to moderate (e.g., Agnoli et al, 2016; Armstrong, 2012; Harris et al, 2019; Liu et al, 2019). See Cropley (2000) and Ochse and Van Lill (1990) for reviews.…”

“…The Alternate Uses Task (AUT) is a classic creativity evaluation tool that has been used for decades in psychological studies to measure divergent thinking [14,15]. The Remote Associations Test (RAT) is a similarly established test that evaluates convergent thinking [16]. These two tests are widely used in creativity studies and provide metrics to measure divergent or convergent thinking.…”

“…Building on previous research, this study focused on the effect of the microalgae facade on architecture students' creative performance and mood during several design tasks. We employed two types of creative design tasks: (1) the Alternate Uses Task [14,15] and Remote Associate Test [16] to assess divergent and convergent thinking in a constrained setting, and (2) a brainstorming task on sustainable design, a more open and naturalistic task. Emotions were tracked using the Brief Mood Introspection [17].…”
