Abstract: Inclusion is seen as an ethical obligation, grounded in notions of equity and social justice for all groups and at all stages of education, with higher education (HE) representing a distinctive space where the inclusion agenda is becoming more influential. However, inclusion is also increasingly recognised as an ambiguous concept that might have lost its critical edge and is in many cases reduced to 'chatter'. “…Las universidades tienen la responsabilidad de repensar sus culturas, políticas y prácticas para que la inclusión sea real y que todas las personas, sin excepción, puedan sentirse realmente reconocidas y bienvenidas, aprendan, participen y tengan éxito (Koutsouris et al, 2022;Lourens y Swartz, 2019;Padilla et al, 2022). Instead of opening up education, we have seen ever‐increasing student fees and a failure by many Russell Group universities to effectively recruit and retain students from disadvantaged contexts (Koutsouris et al, 2022).…”

“…The number of people from vulnerable groups accessing university, including individuals with disabilities, is increasing (Koutsouris et al, 2022). Accessing and completing a higher education degree has been found to be linked to improving the educational, social, employment and life opportunities of students with disabilities (Villouta & Villarreal, 2022).…”

“…For example, data from the latest OECD Education at a Glance report (OECD, 2021) show that people who have a higher education degree can earn, on average, 38% more than their peers who have not studied at university. Undoubtedly, higher education institutions' inclusion, equity and diversity policies play a key role in accessing and successfully completing university degrees (Koutsouris et al, 2022). However, studies conclude that barriers to inclusion are still present in universities around the world (Villouta & Villarreal, 2022).…”
