A Critical Review of Techniques Aiming at Enhancing and Sustaining Worker's Alertness during the Night Shift

Abstract: Two types of methods based on a particular principle allow enhancing and sustaining workers' alertness all along their night work. The first one rather consists in arousing workers by exposing them to stimulant environment conditions (light or noise…) or by giving them natural or pharmacological reactivating substances (caffeine or amphetamines…) for example. The second principle consists in increasing workers' possibilities for resting and allowing them to have short sleep periods or Short Rest Periods (SRP) … Show more

“…Since there are some previous researches 33,34,49) suggesting that a nocturnal nap during night shift might disturb the following daytime sleep and nocturnal sleep, which might produce negative influences on alertness during the next night shift, the possible effects of the naps on physiological variables associated with daytime sleep and nocturnal sleep were analyzed with one-way repeated measures ANOVAs. Post-hoc analyses were performed using Tukey HSD tests to specify differences among the mean values.…”

“…In other countries, there has been growing interested in nocturnal napping, especially for airline pilots 27) , physicians 28) , nurses 28,29) , medical residents and interns 30) , industrial plant operators 31) , and aircraft maintenance engineers 32) . However, the most effective type of nocturnal nap has not yet been determined 33) . Only a few studies have investigated the timing and length of nocturnal naps.…”

“…Short naps are frequently recommended as a strategy to minimise these effects (Å kerstedt, 2006;Bonneford et al, 2004;Schweitzer et al, 2006). Napping preceding night work has been demonstrated to be an effective countermeasure, both in laboratory studies and field settings (Dinges et al, 1987;Harma et al, 1989;Schweitzer et al, 1992Schweitzer et al, , 2006.…”

“…A direct countermeasure is arousing shiftworkers using environmental or pharmacological stimulants, although treating healthy shiftworkers with pharmaceutical products cannot be recommended without taking the risks associated with the treatment into consideration. Another countermeasure against SNS is time scheduling, such as avoiding too many successive night shifts, providing sufficient intervals between shifts, and providing enough possibilities for resting or napping on night shift 9) . However, it is sometimes difficult or impossible for shiftworkers or their managers to practice these countermeasures for reasons specific to each work site.…”
