“…Ariza et al (2007) examined the effects of coumarin on the CNS, and demonstrated possible sedative; anxiolytic (GABAergic and serotonergic/noradrenergic mechanisms); anticonvulsant (voltage-dependent sodium channels mechanism); and antidepressant effects (inhibition of monoamine oxidase) (Chen et al, 2005).With regard to flavonoids, Youdim et al (2004) demonstrated the ability of these compounds to cross the blood-brain barrier and reach the CNS unchanged, which play an important role in the regulation of anxiety and epilepsy (mediated by GABA). Studies involving dibenzyl trisulfide (DTS) isolated from Petiveria alliacea have demonstrated hyper-phosphorylation of growth factor induced MAPKinases (erk 1 and erk 2) phosphorylation, which is critical for the improvement of long-term memory, and neuronal growth (Williams et al, 2007). Thus, the mnemonic effect induced by the Petiveria alliacea extract may be related to DTS acting via the MAPkinase pathway.…”
