“…Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has a well-known role in synaptic plasticity, and has been implicated in response to multiple drugs of abuse (Barker et al, 2015). BDNF expression has been shown to mediate alcohol drinking behaviors in rodents (Pandey, 2016), with increased BDNF in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) resulting in decreased alcohol consumption (Raivio et al, 2014). Alcohol-sired male 129Sv/ImJ 9 C57BL/6J mice and C57BL/6J mice showed increased Bdnf mRNA expression in the VTA (Finegersh & Homanics, 2014;Rompala et al, 2017), which may underlie the observed decrease in alcohol consumption.…”
