A cross-sectional examination of the simultaneous association of four emotion regulation strategies with abnormal eating behaviours among women in Japan

Abstract: Background Research has suggested an association between emotion regulation strategies (ERSs) and abnormal eating behaviours/attitudes (AEB), and many studies have examined the association of one particular ERS with AEB. Additionally, different ERSs are reported to be strongly correlated with each other. Therefore, the associations between an individual ERS and AEB, reported previously, may be spurious. The present cross-sectional study aims to examine the simultaneous associations of four ERSs… Show more

“…Abstract relation between image and text data is established by analyzing the abstract relation between image and text data. Text features are represented by the topic model ( Akbar et al, 2017 ; Murayama and Ohya, 2021 ), and image features are represented by the word vector of Scale Invariant Feature Transform features. A semantic generation model is proposed, which assumes that each modal data is conditionally independent of a particular concept, so the same semantic concept can be generated.…”

“…In contrast, cognitive reappraisal is an antecedent-focused emotion regulation strategy often seen as adaptive, as it interferes at the initial stages of emotional processing by modifying the perception and interpretation of an emotion-eliciting situation, hence preventing the development of negative emotions as well as their deleterious effects on individuals’ emotional experiences [ 37 , 43 , 46 , 47 ]. Empirical investigations on the frequent use of expressive suppression as an emotion regulation strategy have consistently demonstrated its detrimental impact on various aspects of psychological well-being, as individuals experience unresolved aversive emotions and a feeling of discrepancy between their emotional experiences and behavioral expressions, potentially leading them to psychopathological issues including eating disorders [ 47 – 52 ]; whereas the opposite has been remarked for cognitive reappraisal, with no or even inverse relationships with eating disorder symptoms [ 51 53 ]. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has attempted to explore the different relationships between expressive suppression/cognitive reappraisal and orthorexia nervosa to date.…”
