A cross-sectional study of the association between Heberden's nodes, radiographic osteoarthritis of the hands, grip strength, disability and pain

Abstract: Hand OA at these two sites makes substantial contributions to hand function, strength and pain. The associations with function and strength measures appear mediated by pain. Gender differences in all three measures persist after adjustment for variation in age and OA severity indicating that factors apart from radiographic disease are responsible.

“…We also confirmed the cumulative effect of joint involvement and the sum of Kellgren and Lawrence grades on hand functions. Few reports have studied the relationship between the location of hand OA and hand function [5,12]. Jones et al [12] noted that hand OA at the DIP and thumb CMC joints had substantial effects on hand function, but they did not specify which fingers were affected by DIP OA.…”

“…Few reports have studied the relationship between the location of hand OA and hand function [5,12]. Jones et al [12] noted that hand OA at the DIP and thumb CMC joints had substantial effects on hand function, but they did not specify which fingers were affected by DIP OA. Dominick et al [5] reported that, among individuals with radiographic hand OA, increasing radiographic severity was associated with reduced grip and pinch strength, and that radiographic OA in specific locations, such as CMC and MCP joints, might have been at particular risk for reduced hand strength and function.…”

“…Although some items are similar between the pain and function subscales (e.g., turning [ (8). This is particularly important because the investigators who developed the scale have endorsed the use of the subscales individually as well as the total AUSCAN score (4,23).…”

“…The Australian/Canadian (AUSCAN) Osteoarthritis Hand Index is a self-report assessment of these outcomes and was designed specifically for use among patients with hand OA (1,2). Studies have shown that this measure has acceptable reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness (1)(2)(3)(4). However, this is a relatively new scale, and published data on the measurement properties of the AUSCAN index still involve relatively few patients (1)(2)(3).…”
