A cross‐sectional study on Swedish licensed nurses' use, practice, perception and knowledge about complementary and alternative medicine

Abstract: Licensed nurses in Sweden seemed to have an overall positive attitude towards CAM. Although CAM practice was low, a substantial number wished to practise a CAM method in the future. Main barrier for CAM practise and communication was lack of knowledge and evidence, emphasizing the need for structural education, information and research on CAM in Sweden.

“…The discrimination validity and participant characteristics, such as nurse practitioners having better APUTCM and CCTCM scores than nurses, participant self-use of TCM, prior TCM education, or TCM practice in clinical care were associated with higher APUTCM and CCTCM scores. The findings of this study were similar to those of a previous study, in which participants with knowledge about TCM had a significantly ( p < 0.05) higher odds of responding to patient questions about TCM use (OR 3.3; CI 1.4–7.6) [5].…”

“…The common reasons for the non-disclosure of CAM use among patients with arthritis are because they are experienced by unsupportive or negative attitudes from healthcare professionals and lack of knowledge about TCM [4]. In fact, most nurses (73%) do not ask patients about TCM use [5]. As noted in the literature review, we have found globally that many nurses have a lack of TCM knowledge, education, training, institutional support, and resources that are necessary for TCM discussions with patients [6].…”

“…In other countries and other Australian studies, a higher proportion of nurses and midwives reported use of some or all forms of CAM, when compared to the present study (21,23,30,38,40). However, there were differences in how CAM was defined.…”

“…However, research has also revealed several barriers preventing nurses from offering IH therapies. Common themes include lack of knowledge, training, evidence, reliable sources of information, supportive facilities, peer support, time, regulations, and reimbursement [16][17][18][19]. Considerable efforts have been invested in promoting nurses' professional use of IH therapies [20].…”
