A Data-Driven Approach to Development of a Taxonomy Framework for Triple Bottom Line Metrics

Abstract: This paper proposes a data-driven approach to develop a taxonomy in a data structure on list for triple bottom line (TBL) metrics. The approach is built from the authors reflection on the subject and review of the literature about TBL. The envisaged taxonomy framework grid to be developed through this approach will enable existing metrics to be classified, grouped, and standardized, as well as detect the need for further metrics development in uncovered domains and applications. The approach reported aims at d… Show more

“…Another key reference typically used is the triple bottom line (TBL), featuring social, environmental (ecological), and economic dimensions, or pillars, of sustainability (Elkington, 1997). TBL offered a guideline for an economically sustainable strategy in organizations, and for explicitly targeted environmental and social sustainability strategies (Vieira et al, 2019). However, constant flux is expected due to social, political, economic, and environmental pressures (Martens & Carvalho, 2017).…”

“…The triple bottom line (TBL) essentially serves the purpose of a guideline according to which organizations develop and implement not only a traditional economically sustainable strategy, but also explicitly include strategies for environmental and social sustainability [6]. However, the three pillars are expected to be in a constant flux due to social, political, economic and environmental pressures [7].…”

“…Called vehicle-to-grid (V2G) [15,16], this is an emerging technology, which is expected to improve power grid utilization by a better balancing power supply with actual demand. Therefore, BEVs can bring various benefits to the economy, environment and society, that is, the "triple bottom line" of sustainable development [17,18]. As the major concerns surrounding their convenience of use, especially limited driving range and restricted battery charging locations, are being and will continue to be improved, BEVs are arguably a very attractive substitute for conventional ICEVs.…”
