A Data Visualization Procedure for the Evaluation of Group Treatment Outcomes Across Units of Analysis

Abstract: This study presents a novel method for the collection and graphical representation of group evaluation data that enables the simultaneous display of outcomes across units of analysis. This method affords the researcher/practitioner improved options for simultaneously evaluating and comparing individual and group change over time. Data for this study are drawn from 10 experiential, group psychotherapy training groups that met on a weekly basis. A total of 185, second-year graduate social work students evaluated… Show more

“…Commonly available computer spreadsheet applications have been demonstrated to have the capacity to collect and analyze complex data sets and generate graphical representations of complex data (Haber, 1988). Recent advances indicate that data visualization methods may be employed to capture process and outcome variables simultaneously and to compare change across multiple units of analysis and in multiple groups over time (Patterson & Basham, 2002;Basham, 2002). Furthermore, data visualization methods have the capacity to be used to convey meaning and enhance understanding across domains or levels of human service organizations (Patterson & Basham, 2003).…”

“…Additional literature points to the guidelines for effective graphical use in the evaluation of group related services or interventions (Basham, 2002). The 3-dimensional surface plots through the addition of a third axis for displaying information derived from data can demonstrate information about more than one unit of analysis, such as individuals within groups and at the comparison of group level dimensions (Patterson & Basham 2002). Furthermore, data visualization has been considered as a method of providing decision support at multiple levels of human service agency need and more recently as an information feedback system for key decision makers within state government providing protective services to children (Schoech, Basham, & Fluke, 2006).…”

“…There have been a number of reviews of SCDs in group work (Fike, 1980; Johnson, Beckerman, & Auerbach, 2001; Patterson & Basham, 2002; Robison, Morran, & Hulse-Killacky, 1989; Rose, 1977), a few of which can be summarized. In his book on behavioral group work, Rose (1977, pp.…”

“…Measures of comparative group leadership across multiple group service offerings using the spreadsheet tolls and graphing capacities of the Microsoft Excel application were also evaluated. The project entitled "Data Visualization: Graphical Representation in the Evaluation of Experiential Group Therapy Education Outcomes" (Basham, 2002;Patterson & Basham, 2002) is summarized.…”
