A database for estimating organ dose for coronary angiography and brain perfusion CT scans for arbitrary spectra and angular tube current modulation

Abstract: The proposed database and calculation method enable the estimation of organ dose for coronary angiography and brain perfusion CT scans utilizing any spectral shape and angular tube current modulation scheme by taking advantage of the precalculated Monte Carlo simulation results. The database can be used in conjunction with image quality studies to develop optimized acquisition techniques and may be particularly beneficial for optimizing dual kVp acquisitions for which numerous kV, mA, and filtration combinatio… Show more

“…A previous study using a different voxelized phantom suggests that 23% of the eye lens dose is deposited at angles of 50 • to 80 • away from the AP view. 26 Therefore, greater eye lens dose reduction may be possible by increasing the angular range of ODM dose reduction for head scans. The ODM settings investigated in this paper were designed for breast and eye dose reduction.…”

“…We used our previously proposed dose database 41 to estimate protocol-specific "dose conversion factors," which quantified the breast dose and lung dose per photon emitted from the source for each protocol. Because our dose database cannot model shielded scans, we performed Monte Carlo simulations (following the methods of Rupcich et al 41 ) of the female phantom with the shield described in Sec. 2.E to estimate the dose per photon emitted from the source for the shielded protocol.…”

“…Recently a number of research groups have investigated how tube current modulation (TCM) impacts dose and dose conversion coefficients (Huda et al 2008;van Straten et al 2009;Angel et al 2009aAngel et al , 2009bSchlattl et al 2010;Zanca et al 2011;Khatonabadi et al 2012Khatonabadi et al , 2013aRupcich et al 2012;Rendon et al 2013). For example, Schlattl and colleagues (Schlattl et al 2010) published h factors associated with TCM examinations for four adult phantoms and various examination types.…”
