A decision making software for end-of-life vehicle disassemblability and recyclability analysis

Abstract: Currently, many countries have developed new legislations which are aimed at greater emphasis to force motor vehicle manufacturers to recycle their products at the end of their life. However, before end-of-life vehicles can be recycled, the end-of-life disassembly needs to be in placed. It entails large amounts of capital expenditure and time. Most manufacturers would not like to even considering disassembling and recycling the end-of-life vehicles unless costs are justified and financial gains assured. Theref… Show more

“…Wu () published his work on how product design strategy affects the aftermarket chain in terms of pricing. A case study conducted by Afrinaldi et al () shows that all door components have high return values. According to Abdul‐Rashid et al (), sustainable manufacturing and EOL management have significant impact on economic performance.…”

“…This is important because incorporating design strategies such as ease of disassembly and material selection during the early stages of product design and development provides different options for recovery once the product has reached its EOL (Sakundarini, Taha, Ghazilla, & Abdul-Rashid, 2015;Simic, 2016). Products should be designed for ease of disassembly in order to reduce the likelihood of the parts being damaged when the products are disassembled (Guide, 2000), as well as to reduce time and costs (Afrinaldi, Saman, & Shaharoun, 2010;Ghazilla, Taha, Yusoff, Abdul-Rashid, & Sakundarini, 2014;Go et al, 2012;Saman, 2008). Material selection is also an important strategy during product design and development, since it affects EOL product recovery (Ghadimi, Azadnia, Yusof, & Saman, 2012;Sakundarini et al, 2013;Umeda et al, 2013).…”

“…Gehin et al (2008) presented a vision of why and how to integrate the end-of-life strategies in the early design phases, and what tools to apply "3R". Afrinaldi et al (2009) provided a software to evaluate the disassembling and recycling aspects of the end-of-life vehicles and to determine its technological and economic impact. Masanet and Horvath (2004) developed a decision-support tool for the environmental and economic planning of take-back systems for plastic components from end-of-life electronics.…”

“…Thus, it needs a specific reuse evaluation or decision model for the end-of-life wheel loader. Many researches have been conducted on evaluation model in different industries especially in other vehicle industries (Afrinaldi et al, 2009;Aye and Widjaya, 2011;Hatcher et al, 2011;Seitz, 2007;Sherwood et al, 2000). There are almost no reuse articles for the wheel loader especially in reusing directly without or with less processing, a quality evaluation model of the reuse part is proposed here and its management system is developed and demonstrated with a case for a piston rod on the end-of-life wheel loader in this paper.…”

“…According to Ahmad et al, [3][4] business competition requires higher levels of QMP to meet the customer satisfaction [3][5] [6]. QM is a management philosophy that helps manage the organization to improve the effectiveness and business performance to achieve world class status for the past two decades [7][8] [9][10].…”
