“…In terms of tissue reactivity, polypropylene sutures elicit the least inflammatory reactions, along with nonabsorbable sutures such as nylon, polyester, and polybutester, and absorbable sutures such as polyglycolic or polyglactic acid, polydioxanone, and polytrimethylene carbonate 8,20 . Although rare, autoeczematization and refractory eczematous dermatitis, 4 delayed allergic reactions, 9 abscesses, 10 secondary infections, 10 and foreign body granulomas 11 have been documented as a result of retained polypropylene sutures.…”

“…8 Although polypropylene sutures have minimal interaction with skin and are efficient for general soft tissue approximation or ligation, 8 there have been reports of some rare complications related to polypropylene material retention. 4,[9][10][11] In this report, the authors describe a patient who had a buried intradermal polypropylene suture for 3 years and began to experience discomfort only after starting to exercise. The authors review the dermatoscopic and dermatopathologic findings as well as other similar cases involving retained polypropylene sutures in skin.…”

“…2 A foreign body reaction is different from an allergic reaction, which tends to occur early and can be differentiated from delayed foreign body reaction by skin hypersensitivity testing. 3 The presence of these sutures in areas with minimal subcutaneous fat tends to produce irritation, and hence, foreign body granulomas.…”
