“…Isolation of Crystalline DHC from the Crystalline Sterol Mixture Recovered from the Diet, Livers, and Adrenal Glands.-To about 20-30 mg of labeled crystalline-tissue sterols in a screw-capped vial were added 125 mg of unlabeled DHC (a gift of the Schering Corp.), that had been purified as described by Kuroda et al (1964), and 4.0 ml of a chloroform solution containing 2.0 mmoles (a 5-fold excess) of peroxybenzoic acid (Braun, 1941). The latter converted all digitoninprecipitable sterols with double bonds to polar-epoxide derivatives from which the less polar DHC was readily separated by chromatography on aluminum oxide.…”

“…In contrast other workers obtained a high blank value for the method due to a tritium impurity.,s E. THE STANOLS A single isotope derivative dilution method was used for measuring 5a-cholestan-3/3-ol in adrenal tissue. 79 After acetylation with [14C]acetic anhydride and the addition of unlabeled acetate as diluent, the unsaturated sterols were converted into epoxy compounds by treatment with perbenzoic acid before final purification. The lower limit of detection was given as 7 /¿g.…”

“…The presence of cholesterol in the diseased human aorta was recognized early (Vogel, 1847). By the early 20th century both cholesterol (Aschoff, 1906;Windaus, 1910;Schoenheimer, 1926Schoenheimer, , 1928 and cholestanol (Schoenheimer et al, 1930;McArthur, 1942;Mosbach et al, 1963; Kuroda et al, 1964) were established as component sterols in the human aorta.…”
