A design process for a 3D printed patient-specific applicator for HDR brachytherapy of the orbit

Abstract: Background: This report describes a process for designing a 3D printed patient-specific applicator for HDR brachytherapy of the orbit. Case presentation: A 34-year-old man with recurrent melanoma of the orbit was referred for consideration of reirradiation. An applicator for HDR brachytherapy was designed based on the computed tomography (CT) of patient anatomy. The body contour was used to generate an applicator with a flush fit against the patient's skin while the planning target volume (PTV) was used to dev… Show more

“…Furthermore, 3D printed models are now entering clinical use. In the field of oculoplastic surgery, for example, they are being used for orbital fracture reduction and orbital brachytherapy and to create orbital prostheses [ 9 , 18 , 19 ]. Elaborate personalized 3D printed models can be reproduced and processed freely, as with the different decompression models created in our study.…”

“…3D-printed parts have also begun to be incorporated into the delivery of radiation therapy near the eye. Plaque brachytherapy applicators for ocular radiation have been printed [ 129 , 130 ]. 3D printing of an external applicator for delivery of radiation to an orbital fibrous solitary tumor has been demonstrated [ 131 ].…”
