A Detailed Description of Physical Activity Counseling Interventions to Support Physical Activity in People With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract: Physical activity interventions are recommended for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, adherence is low. This scoping review aimed to provide detailed descriptions of physical activity counseling interventions for people with COPD that have been studied in randomized controlled trials. Common components included the use of pedometers/activity monitors, goal setting, and recording physical activity in a written or electronic diary. Clinicians could consider including these compon… Show more

“…Health behavior changes may be more likely to occur when they match the person’s personal goals and when the person is collaboratively engaged in determining the plan for change [ 22 ]. Previously published interventions do not fully address participants’ preferences related to activity type, focus of goals, and adherence strategies [ 14 ]. These limitations limit the participants’ ability to adapt the intervention, which may contribute to their limited long-term effectiveness.…”

“…The curriculum engages participants in setting individualized goals and plan for increasing PA to close the intention-behavior gap. In addition, this intervention allows participants to choose activities, goals, and plans that are most meaningful and feasible for them, which contrasts with other interventions that prescribe a single method of increasing PA (e.g., through walking activity) and goal setting (e.g., increasing daily step counts by a pre-set algorithm) [ 14 ].…”

“…Exercise training programmes, in the form of pulmonary rehabilitation, have typically failed to translate into improvements in sleep quality despite improvements in exercise and functional capacity and quality of life 9 . This suggests the person‐centred approach intrinsic to physical activity counselling, 10 together with the opportunity for communication, discussion and goal setting between the participant and clinician, may be key to the improvements in sleep, symptom control and activity behaviour change seen here. However, why the outcomes of activity counselling were so pronounced in this group requires further exploration.…”
