This study presents an analysis of linear enamel hypoplasias (LEH) and plane-form defects (PFD) in the hominine dental sample from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) Middle Pleistocene site in Atapuerca (Spain). The SH sample comprises 475 teeth, 467 permanent and 8 deciduous, belonging to a minimum of 28 individuals. The method for recording PFD and LEH is discussed, as well as the definition of LEH. The prevalence of LEH and PFD in SH permanent dentition (unilateral total count) is 4.6% (13/280). Only one deciduous tooth (lower dc) showed an enamel disruption. Prevalence by individual ranges from 18.7-30%. The most likely explanation for the relatively low LEH and PFD prevalence in the SH sample suggests that the SH population exhibited a low level of developmental stress. The age at occurrence of LEH and PFD was determined by counting the number of perikymata between each lesion and the cervix of the tooth. Assuming a periodicity of nine days for the incremental lines, the majority of LEH in the SH sample occurred during the third year of life and may be related to the metabolic stress associated with weaning.

Dental health may deteriorate in populations exposed to economic growth as a result of easier access to refined carbohydrates and sugars. Such changes affected migrant labourers working in Kimberley, South Africa, during the late 19th century. A rescue excavation salvaged several skeletons from pauper's graves dating from this period, and the purpose of the study was to assess their dental health to determine whether it concurs with historical statements suggesting that the skeletal population sample being investigated was migrant labourers with limited access to a healthy diet. According to historic sources their diets mainly consisted of ground carbohydrates and occasional meat. The permanent dentition of 79 males and 13 females (majority between 20 and 49 years of age) were examined. Carious lesions were observed in 57% of males and 46.2% of females with an average of 2.7 and 3.8 carious teeth per mouth. The anterior teeth were significantly less affected than the posterior teeth. Periodontal granulomata ('abscesses') were observed in 17.7% of males and 15.4% of females, and periodontal disease affected 40% of those investigated. Antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) was recorded in 29% (N ¼ 27) of the sample with an average of 3.5 teeth lost per mouth.It was concluded that the prevalence of dental caries, periapical granulomata and periodontal disease as well as the pattern of AMTL observed concurs with dietary descriptions for paupers in historical documents. The relatively low prevalence of carious lesions can be ascribed to the limited time migrant labourers spent in Kimberley and the labour restrictions they had to comply with during their stay in the compounds.

AbstraktBuňky produkující tvrdé zubní tkáně zanechávají v průběhu vývoje zubů pod vlivem různých metabolických rytmů záznam o jejich aktivitě ve formě růstových markerů, označovaných jako inkrementální linie. Kromě těchto pravidelných časových markerů jsou v mikrostruktuře zubů zaznamenaná a po celou dobu existence zubu přítomná také metabolická a fyziologická narušení způsobená stresovými událostmi. Cílem tohoto příspěvku je rekonstrukce vývojového záznamu ze zubů kosterního nálezu dítěte z ojedinělého hrobu na lokalitě Muráň-Hrad, Slovensko pomocí metody odontochronologie a také načrtnutí možných přínosů využití histologického přístupu a analýz výbrusů zubů v bioarcheologii při studiu minulých populací. Besides these regular time markers, in the microstructure of teeth metabolic and physiological disturbances caused by stressful events are permanently recorded and observable for as long as the tooth exists. The purpose of the present study was to apply odontochronological techniques in retrieval of a developmental record from dental remains of a child's skeleton from a solitary burial found in a site Muráň-Castle, Slovakia and to outline how bioarchaeology can beneficiate by including the histological approach and analysis of tooth sections in the study of past populations.
