Two selectively deuterated, liquid-crystalline oligomers of different topology, containing the deep-violet perylene mesogen 1, were prepared by two-fold polymer-analogous reaction of a suitable pre-oligomer or by polycondensation of an ester-functionalized monomer. The materials obtained were investigated by optical microscopy, DSC, X-ray diffraction, and solid-state 'H NMR spectroscopy. The structural changes in the mesophases formed and the dynamic phase behavior are discussed, and the results are compared with those obtained from low molecular weight model compounds.
