A dietary pattern rich in fruits and dairy products is inversely associated to gestational diabetes: a case-control study in Iran

Abstract: Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) causes many problems for mother and her neonate. A healthy diet plays an important role in preventing GDM. “…In contrast, a cohort study in Singapore that looked at the relationship between red meat protein consumption and the risk of GDM did not report any significant association 11 . Although there are several investigations on the association between dietary patterns and the risk of GDM in Iran 12 – 14 , studies of the association between the consumption of red and processed meat and the risk of GDM in the Iranian population are lacking. In general, Iranians consume less red and processed meat than those living in Western countries.…”

“…The use of honey in the treatment of diabetes mellitus was confirmed by several studies (e.g., [ 8 , 9 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]). For the potential role of honey in managing glycemia (human blood sugar), honey as a sweetener could be added to food, such as yogurt, which could be consumed daily for chronic diseases [ 17 , 18 ]. Honey has been fortified with many kinds of foods to improve their nutritional and medicinal attributes such as dairy products [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ], various other kinds of foods [ 24 ], and licorice [ 25 ].…”

“…There are some indications that dietary patterns can influence GD development as well. Dietary patterns characterised by high amounts of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables seem to reduce the GD risk, and Western dietary patterns as well as those characterised among others by high amounts of (red and/or processed) meat are associated with higher prevalence [ 8 10 ]. Currently, high meat consumption deserves special attention, because evidence for a direct negative impact on human health is accumulating [ 11 – 15 ] and meat production practices are unsustainable [ 16 ].…”
