A dimensional tolerancing knowledge management system using Nested Ripple Down Rules (NRDR)

Abstract: This paper proposes to use a knowledge acquisition (KA) approach based on Nested Ripple Down Rules (NRDR) to assist in mechanical design focusing on dimensional tolerancing. A knowledge approach to incrementally model expert design processes is implemented. The knowledge is acquired in the context of its use, which substantially supports the KA process. The knowledge is captured which human designers utilize in order to specify dimensional tolerances on shafts and mating holes in order to meet desired classes … Show more

“…This has been a focus of many modelling tools and much knowledge representation research [19]. The knowledge representation framework Nested Ripple Down Rules (NRDR) [6,21] allows an expert to give his/her explanations using his/her own terms and provides a process to control the inconsistencies as the knowledge base evolves. The terms are operational while they are still incompletely defined.…”

“…Furthermore, using this stream incrementally, we aim to develop default theories that correspond to taxonomic structures. As a basis towards this, we use the knowledge base development framework that generates Nested Ripple Down Rules knowledge bases [6,21]. This knowledge base is then systematically converted into a set of default theories.…”

“…Besides the research on whole system creation, some novel methodology used in the steps of accomplishing the system also appeared. RF Hamade et al 16 proposed a knowledge acquisition approach based on Nested Ripple Down Rules (NRDR) to build a dimensional tolerancing knowledge management system which could help mechanical designers become more effective.…”

“…Additionally, up to a certain calculated tolerance, there is an increased discrepancy between the parts due to the mechanical process. The ideal (nominal value) geometrical design of a component is, in reality, manufactured (actual value) with an accepted approximation of imperfections as a consequence of the quality control procedure 243 . Moreover, implant companies may decide to use suppliers, in the components production chain, for a variety of reasons such as accelerating delivery, stronger quality control or reducing operating costs.…”
