“…Another plant Semecarpus anacardium Linn., commonly called Bhallika, Bhallataka, Bhela or Dhobi nut, has long been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for a variety of illnesses including cancer (Sharma, 1982;Nadkarni, 1993;Warrier et al, 1996). The root of T. racemosa plant contains a number of bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBI) alkaloids (Guha et al, 1976;Ray et al, 1989;Ray et al, 1990) and the nut of S. anacardium and its oil contain several phenolics including biflavonoids (Prakash Rao et al, 1973;Gedam et al, 1974;Ishartulla et al, 1977;Murthy, 1985;Rastogi and Mehrotra, 1991). A large body of evidence indicates that many natural phenolic compounds possess anticancer activity (Huang and Ferraro, 1992;Ferguson, 1994;Starvic, 1994;Surh, 1998;Taraphdar et al, 2001), and some BBI alkaloids from different sources also are reported to have similar activity (Seal and Mukherjee, 1997).…”
