A direct method for analyzing the vertical vehicle–structure interaction

Abstract: A new method for the dynamic analysis of the vertical vehicle-structure interaction is presented. The vehicle and structure systems can be discretized with various types of finite elements and may have any degree of complexity. The equations of both systems are complemented with additional compatibility equations to ensure contact between the vehicles and the structure. The equations of motion and the compatibility equations form a single system that is solved directly, thus avoiding the iterative procedure us… Show more

“…An extension of the formulation described in [12][13] that takes into account the lateral dynamic effects between railway vehicles and structures is proposed in the present article. Most of the existing methods treat the contact forces in the normal and tangential directions as external forces, whereas the proposed formulation uses a finite element to model the behavior in the contact interface.…”

“…The vehicle-structure interaction problem can be solved by a direct method [10], based on the Lagrange multiplier method, that avoids an iterative procedure to ensure the coupling between the two systems. This method complements the dynamic equilibrium equations of both systems with additional constraint equations, forming a single system of equations that can be directly and efficiently solved.…”

“…Neves et al [10] developed a simple methodology based on the Lagrange multipliers method in which the dynamic equilibrium equations of both systems are complemented with additional displacement compatibility equations, forming a single system of equations that can be directly solved. However, this method did not take into account the nonlinearities presented in a wheel-rail contact problem such as the bodies separation or deformations.…”
