A discussion of building automation and stakeholder engagement for the readiness of energy flexible buildings

Abstract: Building automation enables the possibility of energy flexibility in buildings. To investigate the motivation and barriers for the energy flexibility in buildings, this study develops a conceptual framework of the readiness for energy flexible buildings by conducting interviews with building automation suppliers, electricity supplier, district heating supplier, distribution system operator, energy service companies, experts in energy and buildings, building managers, and occupants. “…Yet until now, consumers largely remain passive market participants, not willing to adjust their consumption to system needs (Leinauer et al 2022). Indeed, behavioural factors such as risk-willingness and innovation culture play an important role in implementing consumption-side flexibility (Alcázar-Ortega et al 2015;Ma and Jørgensen 2018). Meanwhile, with the planned phase-out of dispatchable fossil-fuel power plants in many countries, demand-side participation in electricity markets is increasingly encouraged to improve the flexibility in the system (Billanes et al 2018).…”

“…Energy systems face challenges due to climate change, distributed energy resources, and political agenda. For instance, in Denmark, By 2030 carbon emissions should be reduced by 70%, with the goal by 2050 being carbon footprint neutrality (Danish Energy Agency 2022a; Ma and Jørgensen 2018). To achieve this goal, the Danish government has introduced initiatives to accelerate the energy system transition to a total reliance on renewable energy sources.…”
