A discussion of some controversies in mixed methods research for emerging researchers

Abstract: Mixed methods research has become an important approach to research worldwide. The combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods has made it possible for a deeper and broader understanding of multifaceted phenomena, thereby offering readers more confidence in research findings and conclusions. The use of mixed method designs became more established in the 1980s and early 1990s, but some controversies surrounding the approach remain. Nonetheless, experts in the field of mixed methods research hav… Show more

“…A total of 89 participants completed the survey. Since the survey was mostly quantitative in nature, the authors wanted to further explore findings with participants as well as dig deeper into the few open-ended questions that they may have answered in hopes of gleaning detailed nuanced responses (Adu et al, 2022;Patton, 2015). Thus, at the end of the survey, participants could opt in to being part of a focus group or individual interview in an effort to further explore the experiences of social science researchers and their respective IRBs.…”

“…A survey was undertaken among SMEs, and the research utilised a probabilitysampling approach with simple random sampling considered in accordance with quantitative methods in this study's design [96]. The systematic, standardised, and frequent way for gathering data from subjects who reflect the study's population is the survey method, which employs questionnaires to collect information from samples of individuals [97].…”

“…We have argued that mixed methods research remains in its infancy stage in school psychology and is thus less well-known in some school psychology circles. Yet, mixed methods research has the capacity to help solve complex problems because of the multiple components that are weaved together such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (Adu et al, 2022; Fetters & Freshwater, 2015; Mertens, 2015). It is also a complex literature, replete with an expansive nomenclature related to the various research designs that can be employed (Creswell & Clark, 2017; Leech & Onwuegbuzie, 2009).…”
