A distributed power control and mode selection algorithm for D2D communications

Abstract: Device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying a cellular infrastructure has recently been proposed as a means of increasing the resource utilization, improving the user throughput and extending the battery lifetime of user equipments. In this article we propose a new distributed power control algorithm that iteratively determines the signal-to-noise-and-interference-ratio (SINR) targets in a mixed cellular and D2D environment and allocates transmit powers such that the overall power consumption is minimize… Show more

“…The study [17] compared different multiantenna transmission schemes. In [18,19], two power control schemes were proposed for a multi-cell MIMO network. In [20], the ergodic capacity for a scenario with only one CUE and one D2D user is derived and cases of high and low SNR as well as high number of antennas in the downlink have been studied.…”

“…There are a few works in the D2D communication literature where the base stations have multiple antennas [16][17][18][19][20]. In [16], uplink MU-MIMO with one D2D pair was considered.…”

“…As it was pointed out by several related works, D2D communications utilizing cellular spectrum pose new challenges, because, relative to cellular communication scenarios, the system needs to cope with new interference situations [4][5][6][7][8][9]. For example, in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in which user equipment (UE) uses D2D communications, the D2D links may reuse some of the OFDM time-frequency physical resource blocks (PRB).…”

“…(1) Mode selection (MS): MS algorithms determine whether D2D candidates in the proximity of each other should communicate in direct mode using the D2D link or in cellular mode via the BS [9,[16][17][18]. [10,[19][20][21]).…”
