A Distributed Wireless Camera System for the Management of Parking Spaces

Abstract: The importance of detection of parking space availability is still growing, particularly in major cities. This paper deals with the design of a distributed wireless camera system for the management of parking spaces, which can determine occupancy of the parking space based on the information from multiple cameras. The proposed system uses small camera modules based on Raspberry Pi Zero and computationally efficient algorithm for the occupancy detection based on the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) feature… Show more

“…IoT techniques, as mentioned by Salpietro et al (2015) open up new possibilities to take advantage of. The architecture proposed in this work focuses on the use of visual sensors, as presented by other authors (Bibi et al, 2018;de Almeida et al, 2015;Masmoudi et al, 2015Masmoudi et al, , 2014Nieto et al, 2018;Paidi et al, 2018;Shih & Tsai, 2014;Vítek et al, 2017); compared to those works, this proposal is not limited to the use of a single technique or machine learning algorithm, but allows the inclusion of several alternatives, leaving it up to the user to choose the most appropriate, even for each parking slot.…”

“…After pre-processing the images using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), grayscale conversion, and binary thresholding, the authors in Vítek & Melničuk (2018) employed a simple image average as their feature descriptor. A threshold is applied in the feature descriptor for classification.…”

“…WVSN (Wireless Vision Sensor Network) is a research field of sensor networks using multiple cameras [29,30]. [31] investigates the trade-off between battery consumption and quality of service depending on whether image processing is performed at the camera node, fog or cloud layer in a WVSN .…”
