A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Health-Outcomes Survey of the Effect of Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections on Quality of Life and Self-Esteem

Abstract: Our findings showed that BoNTA injections result in improvements in QOL and self-esteem. In addition, BoNTA-naïve participants demonstrate greater improvements in QOL and self-esteem than participants previously exposed to BoNTA. Moreover, BoNTA-familiar participants demonstrated sustained improvement in QOL and self-esteem relative to BoNTA-naïve participants, even when injected with placebo.

“…13 The psychological benefits associated with onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox Cosmetic; Allergan plc, Dublin, Ireland) injections to the glabellar area, forehead, and crow's feet lines (CFL) are supported by results from a randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled health outcomes survey, which reported significantly greater quality of life and self-esteem values with onabotulinumtoxinA versus placebo. 14 Additionally, an analysis of data from 2 phase 3 trials on the efficacy of onabotulinumtoxinA treatment for CFL demonstrated consistent positive effects on several PROs, including psychological impact, perception of age, appearance, and satisfaction. 15 Although results of these studies are compelling, their interpretation is limited to benefits of treatment in specific facial regions.…”

“…However, recent data indicate broad psychological benefits associated with aesthetic treatment. [13][14][15] In a multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled (no treatment) study, treatment of moderate-to-severe age-related midface volume deficit with VYC-20L (Juvéderm Voluma XC; Allergan plc, Dublin, Ireland), an injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) filler, resulted in high rates of improvement in subjectassessed satisfaction with facial appearance and with self-perception of appearing to be younger than their actual age. 13 The psychological benefits associated with onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox Cosmetic; Allergan plc, Dublin, Ireland) injections to the glabellar area, forehead, and crow's feet lines (CFL) are supported by results from a randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled health outcomes survey, which reported significantly greater quality of life and self-esteem values with onabotulinumtoxinA versus placebo.…”

“…Ultimately, reasons for the long-term continuation of treatment and adoption of new treatment modalities are likely multifaceted and reflect the complex interrelationship of appearance, patient satisfaction, self-esteem, mood, and quality of life. [23][24][25][26] The benefits of long-term treatment on the SPA seen in this study are unique in that previous studies have been of short duration with more homogenous populations. 11,27,28 In the analysis of long-term patient satisfaction from this study, patients reported looking almost 7 years younger than their actual age.…”

“…[10][11][12] Selfimage is a key motivator for patients deciding to undergo aesthetic procedures, and outcomes are strongly associated with changes in self-esteem that drive patient satisfaction. [13][14][15] In clinical trials of onabotulinumtoxinA, patient satisfaction has been high but not rigorously documented over a long period, 16 with the longest period being a prospective 26-month study showing progressively increasing patient satisfaction across 6 treatment cycles. 17 Despite widespread clinical experience with onabot-ulinumtoxinA, there are little data on its long-term safety because of the generally short duration of randomized controlled trials that frequently investigated only a single treatment cycle.…”
