A Double Excited Synchronous Machine for Direct Drive Application—Design and Prototype Tests

Abstract: This paper presents the analytical, numerical, and experimental results obtained with a double excited synchronous machine (DESM) prototype designed and constructed for an electric vehicle traction system. To obtain a wide speed range, the fluxweakening technique is implemented. Analytical design, 2-D finite element method (FEM) analysis, thermal analysis, and prototype construction of the DESM are discussed, and the performances are assessed with experimental data. Index Terms-Analytical design, double excite… Show more

“…Figure 3a shows the serial hybrid machine topology which consists of the PMs and the additional DC windings in the rotor. The disadvantage of such configuration arises from the necessity of using slip rings to supply the DC windings [9]. The construction shown in Figure 3b is also a serial structure, but two sources of magnetic field excitation are arranged in the stator.…”

“…The design of the PMSM6 can start by the expression of the airgap diameter or by the expression of the magnet volume needed to produce the desired power [8,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. High performance optimization algorithms (genetic or evolutionary type) can be included into the design process [19][20][21][22], in order to improve the power density of the studied machine.…”
