A Downhole Wireline Module for the Measurement of Bubble Point Pressure

Abstract: The accuracy of the phase envelope calculated for a black oil sample strongly depends upon the quality and type of information used to optimize the equation of state (EOS). Possible inputs for EOS tuning include (but is not limited to) composition from a chromatogram or optical absorbance, density, saturation pressure (bubble or dew point pressure), and the relative volumes of liquid and gas. In this manuscript, we describe a workflow using a system of microsensors that our group has previously published that … Show more

“…This newly developed system has been verified to provide accurate thermodynamic bubblepoint pressure measurement with no greater than 25 psi (0.17 MPa) discrepancy compared to that obtained from conventional surface laboratory analysis. 12 Validation of this technique with the literature values for carbon dioxide has been previously reported. 11 This system has been demonstrated and validated during field trials downhole in several oilfields.…”

“…We have recently published results confirming that live crude oils, in spite of contamination by mud filtrate and debris, can display a similarly large degree of supersaturation. 10,12 Hence the supersaturation shown here should be taken as intrinsic to the system consisting of the oil and the confining metal vessel, with the latter being necessary for high-pressure measurements. 4.6.…”

“…Several client-endorsed papers have already been published in various trade journals detailing the use of the MRPV for sample quality validation. ,, Here, we review several field examples which illustrate the utility of this technology to characterize and qualify sampled fluid in real time.…”
