A dual‐band antenna design for GPS and UMTS applications

Abstract: The design of an integrated dual‐band antenna for global positioning system (GPS) and universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) is presented. A circularly polarized square‐ring corner truncated microstrip antenna is designed for GPS application, and a monopolar shorted square patch antenna embedded within the center of the square‐ring is designed for UMTS application. Both proposed antenna elements demonstrated desirable isolation, radiation pattern; polarization, and bandwidth requirement. © 2007 Wile… Show more

“…For modern wireless products, an integrated antenna that can simultaneously support satellite positioning systems and terrestrial mobile communication systems is required. Due to the requirements, several designs related to microstrip antennas with different radiation patterns have been reported . Most of the past designs are based on the concept of using different resonant modes.…”

“…A two‐element coplanar structure was also adopted to obtain different radiation patterns at two operation bands. In , a top‐loaded monopole antenna is integrated into the inner slot of a truncated square‐ring patch antenna, and the integrated antenna can radiate a LP conical pattern at the UMTS band and a CP broadside pattern at the GPS band. A similar design was reported in , where the LP conical pattern is generated from a ring patch antenna resonant at the TM 21 mode.…”

“…In principle, the antennas for CP wave have to excite two perpendicular electric fields with equal magnitudes. Many types of antennas, such as loop [5,6], fractal [7], slot [8,9], and patch [10][11][12] for CP applications have been proposed previously. In [5], an L-shaped slot is embedded in the ground plane for CP characteristics and improving its impedance.…”

“…In [10], CP operation is obtained by selecting an optimal size of the truncated corners. To produce broadside right-hand CP radiation in [11], the square-ring patch is with truncated corners of equal side length. In [12], the patch have four slots at the edges and a cross slot at the center to carry out the CP patterns.…”

“…The antenna must have a single feed so that it can be used for either of the above applications. The required return loss at each frequency is 15db [5][6][7][8]. Initially a design graph is used to determine the dimensions of the antenna.…”
