A dual-port THz Time Domain Spectroscopy System optimized for recovery of a sample’s Jones matrix

Abstract: We describe the design, build and characterization of a novel two-output port configuration for a THz-Time Domain Spectroscopy (TDS) system. By introducing a tilted THz ultra-broadband polarizer, we split the THz beam in two orthogonal polarization detector branches. The probe laser is similarly split (with an optical polarizer) replicating the detection chain to obtain two independent orthogonal polarization detection units. We describe the system’s performance highlighting some of the advantages of this syst… Show more

“…However, the recent technological advancements in optics and electronics, advances in terahertz systems utilizing mode-locked femtosecond fiber lasers, together with advances in emitters and receivers, have led to progress in this field [1]. The use of terahertz transmission mode has a number of significant applications spectroscopy [2], lenses [3], security [5], bio-imaging [6], photonic crystals [7]- [9], high bandwidth communications [10] and biological sensing [11]- [13]. One of the emerging applications of terahertz spectroscopy is to characterize the optical properties of a wide…”

“…One approach relies on detectors that are capable of sensing two orthogonal polarizations simultaneously. This is achieved by using either two separate electro-optic detectors [5][6][7] or three-or four-contact photoconductive antennas (as opposed to conventional two-contact units) [8][9][10][11]. The inherent dependence of electro-optic detection sensitivity on the polarization of terahertz and probe laser radiation can also be employed [12,13].…”
