A Dynamic Transient Model to Simulate the Time Dependent Pultrusion Process of Glass/Polyester Composites

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to introduce a novel dynamic transient model to simulate the time dependent pultrusion process of glass/polyester composites. The model is able to simulate the resin curing process systematically. The resin curing process is divided in two liquid and gel-solid phases. Physical properties of the resin including resin specific heat, viscosity and thermal conductivity change by altering the resin temperature and the degree of cure. It is shown that in liquid and gel-solid phases, so… Show more

“…There are two types of DSC test: dynamic (the resin is heated with a constant rate (1… 15 K/min) [2]) and isothermal (the resin is kept in a constant temperature until the curing process completes). In the pultrusion process, except near the wall of the die region, resin temperature rises almost in the constant rate [3]. So, in the present work the dynamic DSC test method has been applied to obtain the heat generation of the resin, which has been used for a building of the curing kinetic model.…”

“…Moschiar et al (1996b;Li et al, 2002) had studied the pultruded curing system by simulating using finite element analysis where the heated die is separated into three heating zones. Shokrieh and Aghdami (2011) developed three stage cure degree sections inside the heated die in pultrusion machine. They developed a three stage gel point model using finite element simulation to analyse the behavior of the resin in pultrusion process.…”
