A dynamically adaptable polling scheme for voice support in IEEE802.11 networks

Abstract: This paper presents a new dynamically adaptable polling scheme for efficient support of voice communications over an IEEE802.11 network. The proposed Cyclic Shift and Station Removal polling scheme is implemented only on the Access Point of each Basic Service Set without requiring any modification on the existing access protocol. This polling scheme increases the number of conversations in case of silence detection, while maintains high voice quality. By considering constant bit rate digitized voice traffic, t… Show more

“…The biggest disadvantage of PCF is that a lot of bandwidth is wasted by sending polls and NULL data when stations have no data to send. In order to reduce the overhead and increase the channel utilization, some works have investigated the performance of the PCF when used to support real-time traffic, and modified the standard PCF [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…A. Kanjanavapastit proposes a modified PCF [6,7], modified PCF reduces the channel under-utilization due to polling overheads and null packets that occurs in the standard PCF, and increase the utilization of channel. Meanwhile, the dynamically polling strategy is adopted to decrease the overhead due to NULL package and CF-Poll when stations have no data to send [10,11]. Shuai [12] modified PCF to improve the WLAN real-time performance in the large telescope control system.…”

“…A dynamically adaptable polling scheme is introduced in [13] in order to support voice traffic over WLANs. In particular, the authors in [13] propose a cyclic shift and a station removal polling scheme that is implemented on APs and does not require modifications to the mobile station medium access mechanism.…”
