In some geographically challenging areas (such as deserts, seas, and forests) where direct connectivity to a terrestrial network is difficult, space communication is the only option. In these remote locations, Internet of Space Things (IoST) applications can also be used successfully. In this paper, the proposed payload for IoST applications demonstrates how an Automatic Identification System (AIS) and a fire detection system can be used effectively. A space mission based on efficient and low-cost communication can use a constellation of nanosatellites to better meet this need. These two applications, which use a constellation of nanosatellites, can provide relevant university-level data in several countries as an effective policy for the transfer of space technology in an educational initiative project. To enhance educational participation and interest in space technology, this paper shares the lessons learned from the project feasibility study based on an in-depth design of a nanosatellite with several analyses (data budget, link budget, power budget, and lifetime estimation). Lastly, this paper highlights by experiments the development and application of a cost-effective sensor node for fire detection and the use of GPS to enable AIS capabilities in the IoST framework.

This letter presents a novel reconfigurable low‐profile Automatic Identification System antenna that exhibits insensitivity to ground size. The antenna's physical dimensions measure 340 mm × 230 mm × 83 mm. Typically, smaller antennas require larger ground planes. However, changes in ground size cause the resonant frequency of the small antenna to shift, thereby limiting its working environment. Consequently, the antenna cannot function in systems with varying ground areas. To address this issue, a reconfigurable Inverted‐F antenna loaded with shorted parasitic elements is proposed. By switching the shorted state of a parasitic element, the antenna can operate within the required frequency band for different ground sizes. Simulated results demonstrate that the antenna can cover the 161–163 MHz frequency range when the ground size ranges from 250 × 250 to 450 × 450 mm2 with a shorted parasitic element. When the parasitic unit is not shorted, the antenna can cover the same frequency range when the ground size ranges from 450 × 450 mm2 to infinity. The proposed antenna achieves the characteristic of being insensitive to ground‐size changes in two states, and is widely applicable to devices with different ground sizes (such as ships and airplanes, etc.), reducing the cost of the system.

A Steady FastICA Algorithm Based on Modified-M Estimate Function

In order to improve the detection rate of ship information, this paper adopts fast independent component analysis (FastICA) algorithm to separate satellite-based automatic identification system (AIS) mixed signals. FastICA algorithm has the advantages of fast convergence rate and simple form. However, it is sensitive to the initialization of the separation matrix and the robust performance is poor. Aimed at the problem, this paper proposes an improved FastICA algorithm. This new algorithm is based on constant model of AIS signal and chooses Modified-M estimation function as nonlinear function so as to improve the robustness of algorithm. The improved algorithm also modifies Newton iterative algorithm. The experimental simulation results indicate that the proposed method reduces the iteration times, the accuracy has been improved.
