A Family of Heuristic-Based Inequalities for Maximizing Overall Safety Margins in Aircraft Parking Stands Arrangement Problems

Abstract: We consider the problem of arranging a set of aircraft in a maintenance hangar operated by an independent aircraft service provider. The overall safety margins of the parking layout need to be maximized within the limited available space, measured by the weighted sum of the individual discrete safety margins of each aircraft. A mixed-integer linear programming model is developed, and the positions of the aircraft are determined by the position-controlling binary variables associated with a set of revised No-Fi… Show more

“…Flight irregularities caused by airline companies, severe weather conditions, air traffic control and other reasons, are almost unavoidable. Generally speaking, flight recovery mainly covers aircraft recovery, crew recovery and passenger recovery (Qin et al , 2018). To recover the aircraft, measures including the use of alternative aircraft, aircraft replacement, aircraft exchange and aircraft overtime operation can be taken.…”

“…As a result, most international airports have experienced heavy air traffic delays in the past two decades. An increase in expenses for crews, fuel, maintenance and gross profit may be the consequences of flight delays (M. Ball et al, 2010;Lu, Zhu, Han, & Hu, 2019;Qin, Wang, Chan, Chung, & Qu, 2018. Hence, airport capacity management is of utmost importance to deal with issues in terms of ATC resource allocation (M. O.…”

“…To achieve collision avoidance within the hangar, Qin et al proposed a novel mixed‐integer linear programming method with No‐Fit Polygon method (Qin, Chan, et al, 2018). Moreover, to fasten the computation speed, Qin et al proposed a family of heuristic‐based inequalities and maximized the safety margins for aircraft allocation (Qin, Wang, et al, 2018). For the hangar parking stand allocation problem, an event‐based discrete model was proposed and mixed‐integer linear programming was utilized to obtain the hangar parking scheme in view of dynamic timetable of the maintenance schedule (Qin et al, 2019).…”
