A fast volume measurement method for obtaining point cloud data from bulk stockpiles

Abstract: To improve the efficiency of port bulk handing, a fast volume measurement algorithm for the irregular bulk cargo is proposed in this paper. The elevation laser scanner and solid-state lidar was used to obtain the geometric information of bulk piles. The 3D point cloud data of the irregular bulk cargo was then extracted, and the volume of the pile was calculated by the point cloud. In order to realize the fast measurement, the algorithm obtain a series of sliced point clouds firstly, and generate the slice m… Show more

“…In contrast, using laser scanning [16][17][18] allows for the acquisition of complete point cloud data for coal piles, but, for large-scale coal piles, a single laser scanner operates at a slow speed and produces sparse point clouds [19,20]. Therefore, this study employs a system of multiple fixed LiDARs to construct a coal pile scanning system, which offers several advantages.…”

“…An alternative approach is to reduce the spatial complexity by layering the model, which reduces the computation time at the expense of a small portion of the accuracy. Changing the slice direction and using adaptive cut intervals can improve accuracy. , Conceptually, slicing transforms a 3D surface into a series of 2D curves, which is more intuitive and easier to implement …”

“…28,29 Conceptually, slicing transforms a 3D surface into a series of 2D curves, which is more intuitive and easier to implement. 30 In this paper, we propose a two-step computational method. Initially, we employ a prematched approach to slice two molecular grid models, obtaining the polygonal contours formed by the molecules in each layer.…”
