A feasibility study of a theory-based intervention to improve appropriate polypharmacy for older people in primary care

Abstract: Background A general practitioner (GP)-targeted intervention aimed at improving the prescribing of appropriate polypharmacy for older people was previously developed using a systematic, theory-based approach based on the UK Medical Research Council’s complex intervention framework. The primary intervention component comprised a video demonstration of a GP prescribing appropriate polypharmacy during a consultation with an older patient. The video was delivered to GPs online and included feedback emphasising the… Show more

“…An online video was chosen to deliver the BCT 'Modelling or demonstrating the behaviour' in both interventions. This decision was informed by a recent project which had utilised a similar approach [22,36] deemed acceptable by GPs in that study [39]. As both HCP groups in the current study had highlighted the time pressures they faced when managing medicines for PwD, it was envisaged that a video would not take up too much time and be readily accessible to HCPs working in busy clinical settings.…”

“…Quantitative results were analysed using descriptive statistics. A content analysis based on these responses was conducted by RA to determine themes identified by participants and then were shared with another research team member (ML) to verify the results [40].…”

“…As discussed above, the existing intervention package consists of two main components; an online video which demonstrates how GPs can improve appropriate polypharmacy during typical consultations with older patients, and a patient recall process, whereby patients are invited to medication review consultations with GPs [4,15]. The video component seeks to enable GPs to use available time more e ciently by demonstrating how appropriate polypharmacy can be prescribed during routine consultations with older patients (BCT: Modelling or demonstrating of behaviour), rather than introducing new behaviours or tasks for GPs to perform.…”
