A Feasibility Study on Smart Mattresses to Improve Sleep Quality

Abstract: Good sleep quality is essential, especially for clinical users. Sleep disorders not only impair the success rate of treatment but also delay recovery. They can seriously interfere with treatment outcomes and even endanger a user’s life. In this study, we created a smart mattress containing 10 × 18 air packs and control units. Each air pack contains a set of pressure and height sensors and two air valves. Each row control unit can detect and adjust the pressure and height of each air bag in the row. When the be… Show more

“…An extended sleep period may disrupt the normal circadian rhythm, resulting in abnormal levels of neurotransmitters in the brain during a speci c period, thus affecting cognitive functions such as memory and language [27][28][29]. Second, the effect of sleep on brain neurotransmitters excessive sleep may lead to disorders in the level of neurotransmitters in the brain, especially those closely related to cognitive function, such as acetylcholine [30]. This may hinder the everyday communication of nerve cells and eventually affect the execution of cognitive function.…”

“…A previous study using a zoned spring mattress (Verhaert et al, 2011 ) indicated that suitable support improved the sleep quality for the participants who spent most of the time in a lateral or prone posture. Zhang et al ( 2021 ) recently proposed a smart mattress that could automatically recognize the sleeping position and adjust the pressure during sleep, but it lacked the support of sleep experiments. A smart, real-time adjustable zoned air mattress was designed as part of this study.…”

“…It has been determined that overweight users are not taken into consideration in the process of designing and making furniture construction in Slovakia (Réh et al, 2019). With beds and mattresses, the implications are broader than pure furniture durability as they affect sleep quality and subsequently quality of life (Zhang et al, 2021). Therefore, the aim of the research presented in this article was to determine whether for such Slovak consumers it is possible to easily find and acquire an appropriate mattress.…”
