A Feasibility Trial for Virtual Administration of the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: The Test of Gross Motor Development-3 is one of the most popular assessment tools in physical education and physical activity settings. It is a valid assessment originally designed to administer in-person, but the virtual administration of the assessment has yet to be deemed feasible. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the trial feasibility of virtual data collection using the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 to assess the fundamental motor skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. “…The TGMD‐3 was coded independently by a highly trained researcher who was involved in the development of the TGMD‐3, and she deemed the final videos to be valid. A recent study on virtual administration of the TGMD‐3 in children with autism spectrum disorder demonstrated that parents could be effectively involved in the data collection process (Prieto et al, 2022). In that study, instructional videos guided parents in administering the assessment, and the necessary equipment was sent by mail.…”

“…The parent set up the testing equipment in the home, positioned the tablet to ensure that performance was clearly recorded, and prompted their child as necessary to complete the test. Feasibility of remote administration of the TGMD-3 was recently supported in a study of children with autism using a comparable protocol (Prieto et al, 2022).…”
