A field experiment on the development of sedimentary structures in a gravel‐bed river

Abstract: In gravel-bed rivers, bed sedimentary structures exert a significant influence on the stability of the bed, particle motion and stream dynamics. A detailed description of the development of sedimentary structures is essential to define the overall activity of sediment transport. This paper aims to improve our understanding of the dynamics of sedimentary structures at the reach scale using a field approach. The objectives of the study are (1) to describe the processes of sedimentary structures development from … Show more

“…Channel morphology does not only influence particle pathways, but the latter also contributes to the maintenance of bedforms (Sear, ; Milan et al, ; Lamarre and Roy, ; Milan, ). Our results highlight some differences between SP and RP channels in the way moving gravels interact with macroforms.…”

“…Examining passive tracers in the field introduces an ambiguity; one measures particle displacement -i.e., the distance a particle travels between successive surveys of its position -but this displacement is composed of an unknown number of steps and rests. Displacement length distributions measured for individual floods, and at longer timescales over many floods, typically follow exponential or gamma-like distributions (Hassan et al, 1991;Schmidt and Ergenzinger, 1992;Habersack, 2001;Lamarre and Roy, 2008;Bradley and Tucker, 2012;Hassan et al, 2013;Phillips et al, 2013). We propose two simple limits for particle displacement during a flood: (1) the lower limit is that a particle executes a single step, with a characteristic length scale predicted by Eq.…”

“…RFID transponders are resistant to shock and temperature fluctuations (Texas Instruments, ). When properly installed in natural or artificial rocks, recovery rates can remain high even after multiple years in harsh environments (Lamarre and Roy, , ; Biron et al , ; Houbrechts et al , ). Reduced transponder size now allows tagging of smaller particles, increasing the size range of sediment particles that can be tracked (Allan et al , ; Texas Instruments, ; see also Table ).…”
