A Field Survey of Traditional Nomadic Dwelling Gers Used as Urban Habitats in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Abstract: In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, 30% of households in urban settlements live in traditional mobile dwellings-gers. This study outlines urban gers based on a field survey of 49 households. The authors analyse space heating and thermal characteristics of ger envelopes, which are essential factors for the emission of air pollutants during winters. The results suggest the necessity of urgent policy implementation of the change of coal stoves to other appliances with better energy performance and lower pollutant emissions… Show more

“…Gers can be easily assembled and disassembled by two to four adults within a few hours. According to a questionnaire survey conducted by Purev and Hagishima [10], most people living in urban gers partially reassemble their gers approximately twice a year in order to dry the felt sheets, to add more felt sheets, or to improve the airtightness between various components for severe winters. The interior space of most gers can be classified into several functional zones by furniture, and the layout of furniture is relatively similar among households.…”

“…With this background, the authors conducted a series of field surveys on the design of existing urban gers, people's lifestyles and interest in improving their living environment, and the indoor thermal environment 5) . In this paper, we propose a thermal insulation retrofitting method tailored to urban gers based on the results of the field surveys.…”

“…Biomass supply approximately 11-12% of primary energy consumption of the world 3) . In developing countries, biomass is the most primary energy by the number of approximately 38% of total energy consumption in rural areas and approximately 90% of the total energy supply 1,4) . With an estimated 90% of world population in the area will be developed in 2050, the biomass energy will remain a substantial source of reserve energy 3,4) .…”
