“…On the other hand, people not bitten by their own dogs usually report the bites so that the owner of the offending dog may incur the cost of post-exposure treatment. Other authors (Bello et al, 2007;Bata et al, 2011;Hambolu et al, 2014;Ehimeyin et al, 2014;Eke et al, 2015) who reviewed records of shorter durations from Bauchi, Plateau, Lagos, Kaduna and Edo states respectively reported a higher number of bite cases. The monthly trends of dog bite cases revealed an increase in the number of exposures recorded in January and February coinciding with the peak of dry season where dog activity is considered to be highest (Okoh, 2007).…”

“…Developing countries with a large number of dogs, most of which movement are not restricted, account for approximately 98 percent of human rabies [ 2 ]. The first documentation of rabies in Nigeria in humans was in 1912 and in dog in 1925 [ 3 ] and since then many authors [ 4 - 8 ] have established that the disease is endemic in the country with more recent reports [ 2 ] showing that the prevalence of the disease is on the increase. The dog is the principal host that maintains and transmits the disease to other animals and man in Nigeria [ 9 - 13 ] where an estimated 10,000 people are exposed annually through dog-bites.…”

“…Rabies has recently been reported by several workers in Nigeria among adult dogs (Bello et al, 2007;Aliyu et al, 2010;Ogo et al, 2011), puppies (Bello et al, 2007;Kujul et al, 2012), sheep (Bello et al, 2007), cattle (Bello et al, 2007) and elsewhere (Cohen et al, 2007). These works have confirmed the endemicity of rabies in Nigeria since the first report in 1912 (Umoh and Belino, 1978;Nawathe, 1980).…”
