A filter-paper method for determining the moisture characteristics of soil

Abstract: A simple filter paper method for estimating a wide range of moisture potentials has been tested for fifteen soils ranging in texture from sands to heavy clays. The method has given estimates of moisture potential from -0.1 to -900 bars with an accuracy that should be acceptable for many types of field experimentation. Relationships between 15-bar percentages determined by both the filter paper and pressure membrane methods, and biologically determined permanent wilting percentages for wheat, are discussed.

“…Briefly, this involved removal of surface litter, air drying, sieving to 2 mm and dilution with an equal weight of dry, washed river sand (sterilized at 200 mC for 24 h and passed through a 2 mm mesh). This soil\sand mix is referred to hereafter as ' dilute soil ' : subsamples were removed for analysis and the matric potential of the bulk mixture adjusted to k0n006 MPa (Fawcett & Collis-George, 1967) by addition of deionized water.…”

“…Woodland litter was removed by sieving to 4-mm mesh, and soil air-dried in gravel trays (Stewart Plastics, Croydon). Air-dried soil (150 g) was rewetted to a matric potential of k0n006 MPa, measured by the method of Fawcett & Collis-George (1967), with either distilled water or distilled water amended with nutrients as described below. This soil was then added to 24-cm bioassay trays (Nunc.…”

“…After removal of leaf and woody litter, the top 10-15 cm of soil was sieved (4 mm mesh) and air dried. The soil matric potential was initially adjusted, by addition of distilled water, to -0-012 MPa, measured using the method of Fawcett & Collis-George (1967).…”
