A first comprehensive inventory of Ascalaphidae, Palparidae, and Myrmeleontidae (Insecta: Neuroptera) of Northeastern Nigeria with description of two new species and an overview of genus Bankisus Navás

Abstract: Investigation of a large collection of Neuroptera from Northeastern Nigeria stored untouched in alcohol for four decades in the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia, provided the opportunity to examine unpublished specimens and conduct a thorough review of published literature, establishing the first comprehensive inventory of Ascalaphidae, Palparidae, and Myrmeleontidae of Northeastern Nigeria to date. Specimens had been collected between 1976 and 1978 in Northeastern Nigeria, mostly in Jos City and Plat… Show more

“…Even the number of families of lacewings in the modern fauna is a matter of debate and differs between authors: 19 13 , 17–18 8 , 16 9 , 14 16 , 15 17 , 18 or 14 19 ; overall 21 names for supposed families can be found (references above; 20 ). Some newer publications have reduced the numbers by 1 (recent example in 21 ), but others have revived long synonymised names 22 and even introduced new ones 23 , 24 . The resulting range in the numbers of families in the modern fauna (≈13 to 21) is quite large and depends on the taxonomic interpretation of the author(s).…”

“…The main question when using these names is therefore whether it is more appropriate to follow an exclusive (Ardila-Camacho et al 2021) or an inclusive strategy (Willmann 1990(Willmann , 1994. A comparable case dilemma also within Neuroptera is currently seen in the relationships of Ascalaphidae and Myrmeleontidae (Jones 2019and Prost & Popov 2021vs. Machado et al 2019, although the present case is even more complex since the one might be an ingroup of the other or vice versa (Jones 2019;Prost & Popov 2021;Machado et al 2019vs.…”

“…Outside of Southern Africa, it can be assumed that similar speciation mechanisms were at play, involving ecological specialization to specific environments. For instance, although the sister species Palpares incommodus and P. radiatus are both present in the Sudanian–Ethiopian bioregion, each of them is restricted to either a wet or a dry habitat (Prost & Popov, 2021).…”
