Based on the analysis of 12 egg and larval variables and temperature of 65 temperate freshwater fish species, the possible relationships between oocyte diameter, larval size at hatch, time and temperature were reassessed and the main early life-stage strategies were described and compared. Time and degree-days required to reach hatching and mixed feeding were weakly related to oocyte diameter and strongly to temperature. These results are chiefly because oocyte diameter and yolk reserves are weakly related and temperature strongly increases tissue differentiation rate, activity of hatching glands and embryo motility. Strong positive relationships were found between larval size and oocyte diameter and degree-days for incubation. No relationship was found between larval size and degree-days from hatching to mixed feeding and between degree-days for incubation and degree-days from hatching to mixed feeding. These last two results are chiefly because the developmental stages at hatching and at the onset of exogenous feeding are not fixed in ontogeny and are not directly related to either larval size or degree-days for incubation, but more probably are species specific. Whatever the spawning season, which can occur almost all year long, the different trade-offs at the early life-stages ensure that most larvae are first feeding during spring, when food size and abundance are the most appropriate.

Newly hatched Coregonus maraena (Bloch) larvae reared in aquaria were observed during two trials in 2014 and 2015 for 42 and 34 days after hatching in order to determine the on-feeding effects of different feeding strategies on growth and survival. Feeds of commercial dry feed, live Artemia nauplii, frozen rotifers, and mixtures of these were compared. Larval whitefish were fed brine shrimp for up to 13 days beginning 4 days post hatch (dph). Whitefish larvae fed live Artemia for 8-9 h per day over a period of 10-12 days grew considerably larger (mean value of final total length (TL) 27.3-33.0 mm)) and were heavier (mean value of final body weight (BW) 112-165 mg)) than those fed dry feed, frozen rotifers, or Artemia for 3-6 days (TL= 22.6-30.2 mm; BW= 50-102 mg). The growth of larvae fed for 24 h solely on dry food was comparable (BW= 101 mg, TL= 26.6 mm) at 42 dph. Survival differed among groups (31-63%) and was highest for larvae fed dry food exclusively. Our results can improve the first feeding of Maraena whitefish larvae in small-scale fish farms.

Mass labelling techniques have great potential for the study of larval fish dynamics in closed habitats (lakes, ponds and flooded quarries) . Different methods of mass labelling of bone tissue were tested : bathing in tetracycline solutions with or without osmotic shock, and modification of otolith microstria by temperature, photoperiod or feeding manipulations using different batches of eggs, eleuteroembryos, larvae and prefed fry of Coregonus lavaretus L . from Lake Leman . A short period of immersion with osmotic shock produced better results than longer bathing (6 to 18 h) in low concentration (400 mg 1 -1 ) tetracycline solutions . At the `eyed' stage of eggs when otoliths appear, it is possible to use the immersion technique in a hyperosmotic solution (5 to 12% sodium chloride) with 1 % tetracycline (as the Hydrochloride or Oxytetracycline) . Optimal immersion times (maximal labelling with minimal mortality) were determined as follows : 10 to 15 minutes for `eyed' eggs, 3 .5 min . for eggs just before hatching and eleuteroembryos, 1 .5 min. for prefed larvae and less than 1 min . for fry of more than 20 mm total length . Microscopic examination of otoliths and caudal vertebrae from coregonid larvae and juveniles reared for two years has allowed us to determine the effectiveness and persistence of fluorescent tetracycline makers . 399
