A five-decade review of gender-based occupational segregation: A bibliometric study of influential authors, institutions, and research clusters

Abstract: Despite the proliferation of occupational segregation research, only a limited amount has explored it from a gender perspective. The attention that has been given is widely scattered and requires an analysis to identify the major works undertaken and the changes over time. This study aimed to examine and assimilate articles published on gender-based occupational segregation through a bibliometric analysis. The study examined 512 articles published from the early 1970s to 2020 that were retrieved from the Web o… Show more

“…This result is similar to other scientific fields where 80% predominates as Latin American contribution of original articles by scientific production by country (Chinchilla-Rodríguez et al, 2015) and in some areas reaching more than 90% (Coimbra et al, 2019). Likewise, year 2018 shows the highest number of articles, a fact that is also corroborated in other research where the same year shows remarkable growth (Sachdeva et al, 2021). In Latin America, remarkable growth was seen in 2018 due to the licensing processes of national universities (Mayta-Tristán et al, 2019), as is the Peruvian case.…”

“…A literature review is an instrument that helps in understanding the current state of research and identifying future research directions (Tranfield et al, 2003), whereas a structured literature review entails a wide range of literature and provides a thorough and in-depth analysis (Kataria et al, 2020). In this regard, the bibliometric approach provides an effective way of handling a large collection of scientific publications (Sachdeva et al, 2021). The approach provides ways to capture the evolution and development of research areas based on social, conceptual and intellectual structure (Baruah et al, 2023;Rodrigues et al, 2022).…”

“…However, to explore the research depth, a traditional method such as a structured literature review can provide better insights. According to Sachdeva et al (2021), bibliometric analysis and structured literature review complement each other. Therefore, to increase the robustness of this study, bibliometric analysis along with content analysis of the selected articles was conducted.…”

“…A comprehensive understanding of the expanding body of EE literature was sought through the application of a bibliometric research tool based on the insights provided by Linnenluecke et al (2020) and the procedures detailed by Sachdeva et al (2021). The review methodology is informed by the adoption of the Scientific Procedures and Rationales for Systematic Literature Reviews (SPAR-4-SLR) protocol, developed by Paul et al (2021) (see Figure 2).…”

“…Co-citation analysis determines the degree of association between cited references by measuring the number of times two documents are cited concurrently by a third source (Zupic & Cater, 2015). This method is valuable for exploring emerging research themes derived from prior discussions and for comprehending the relationships among the cited references (Sachdeva et al, 2021). Based on the network map of co-citation analysis, four clusters are formed.…”
