A Flexible and Reliable Traffic Control Protocol for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

Abstract: Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) are more and more wildly used for a variety of applications nowadays. The qualityof-service (QoS), as a measure of system performance, is very important and attracts many researchers. The limited bandwidth should be adjusted for the packets with different priorities precisely. Even more, when the WMSNs are used for environment monitoring, besides the real-time video playing, the monitoring systems also need to record and playback the video after some time. So the nec… Show more

“…In the literature, there exist some studies on adaptive protocol design targeting such data characteristics. In [11], the authors propose an adaptive bandwidth assignment mechanism for video transmission, by allocating more bandwidth to the high priority packets, which are the inter-frame packets, and less bandwidth to the low priority packets, which are the predicted frame packets of H.264 standard video coding mechanism, ensuring that every packet is sent at the minimum sending rate for fairness. In [12], an optimal rate-adaptive inplatoon data dissemination technique is proposed.…”

“…In recent years, there have been studies on congestion control, reliable transmission, and congestion mitigation in WMSNs [17][18][19], but few of them really consider timing of realistic hardware constraints. Transmission control protocol (TCP) provides famous rate control scheme [20,21].…”

“…Furthermore, WMSNs have additional requirements such as in-node (sensor node) multimedia processing techniques (e.g. distributed multimedia source coding and data compression [3][4][5] ), application-specific quality of service (QoS) requirements, 6 and multimedia in-network processing techniques (e.g. storage management, data fusion, and data aggregation [7][8][9][10][11] ).…”
