A Flexible Display Enables a New Intuitive User Interface

Abstract: The authors developed a prototype for a flexible‐display system integrated with a bend‐input function that enables users to interact with the display by flexing it. The display enables users to feel as if they are operating objects on the screen directly with their hands. This interactive intuitive interface is suitable for simple operations in application software and opens up new possibilities for flexible displays to be used as user‐interface devices.

“…The effectiveness of various bend gestures were evaluated in [5] on a PaperPhone prototype with flexible E-Ink display, where bend gesture input can be recognized and user preferred gestures and gesture pairs were identified. A flexible display prototype with an 8.4" SVGA TFT-LCD on a thin glass substrate was developed in [6], where bendinput function was integrated and zooming in/out and page up/down functions were demonstrated.…”

“…Flexible AMOLED has much more vivid appearance than the E-Ink display in [5] and is much lighter and thinner than the TFT-LCD in [6]. The thinner form factor further improves its flexibility and hence robustness.…”
