“…Nanoparticles, magnetic particles, specific nucleic acid probes, enzyme cycling and photonic thermocycling platforms have been merged with the conventional systems to improve their detection limits and reduce the turnaround time. 55,57,58,63,81,83 While being independent of thermocycling, exhibiting equal or better accuracy and reducing the time required for results, isothermal amplification-based nucleic acid detection platforms have been developed. [92][93][94][97][98][99][100]105,112,[115][116][117]120 Even though the traditional techniques have evolved, they are still not able to reach the most vulnerable populations due to their stringent requirement of working conditions and need for advanced infrastructure.…”

“…A 1200-fold enhanced detection sensitivity was observed when compared with colorimetric AuNPs-LISA. 58 To increase the reach of this platform to places where infection with Opisthorchis viverrini is common, a smartphone-based portable fluorometer was designed to be used as a POC device for diagnosis of OvAg in urine samples. 59 Wu et al , 2017 were able to develop an enhanced fluorescence ELISA system which utilized human alpha-thrombin triggering fluorescence turn-on signals.…”

“…Lastly, the main drawback of urine assay by ELISA is that it takes time to complete and needs experienced operators and special equipment. Adaptation of the urine assay for rapid-test platforms [ 31 , 32 ], including rapid diagnostic tests, is needed for large scale screening of opisthorchiasis.…”

“…The concentrations of Opisthorchis viverrini antigen in urine samples is so low that the sensitivity of colorimetric AuNPs‐based assays cannot meet the requirement of detecting the early‐stage liver fluke infection. To address this issue, the same research group [ 97 ] further developed an AuNPs‐based FLEIA by substituting TMB with o‐phenylenediamine. The fluorescence assay could detect Opisthorchis viverrini antigen in the range from 34.18 to 273.44 ng mL –1 with a LOD of 36.97 ng mL –1 , a 1200‐fold higher sensitivity than the colorimetric one.…”
